Effect of Antineoplastic Drugs and Specific Phage on Pseudomonas Infection in Mice

Abstract

|
Attempts to increase the susceptibility of mice to pseudomonas infection by treatment with antineoplastic drugs and to, protect the mice from , Pseudomonas infection with-pseudomonas phage resulted in the following observations.
Methotrexate(160mg/kg), prednisolone(80mg/kg), and cyclophosphamide(300 mg/kg) treatment increased the susceptibility of mice to intraperitoneal pseudomonas infection, the effect being greatest in the methotrexate-treated group.
Intraperitoneal administration of pseudomonas phage protected the mice treated with prednisolone or cyclophosphamide as well as the normal ones. Pseudomonas phage, however, could¢¥nt protect the mice challenged with heavy inoculum of the organism.
Nonencapsulated strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa appeared to be more virulent to mice than encapsulated one.
